Privacy policy

This page explains what we collect when you apply or get in touch, why we collect it, and the rights you have over your data.

Who we are

Unicorn Embassy is run by Yan Nerovny, an individual based in Yerevan, Armenia. There is no company behind it and no separate legal entity.

Yan Nerovny is the data controller for the information described here. We are a small operation, so we do not have a Data Protection Officer. For anything about your data, write to yan@nerovny.com.

What we collect

We only collect what you give us through our application and contact forms, plus a little technical data needed to run the site safely. Depending on which form you fill in, that can include:

  • Your name, email, and Telegram handle.
  • Your city and LinkedIn profile.
  • Your company or firm name, where relevant to your role.
  • Startup details: name, stage, one-line description, and website.
  • For investors: your check-size band.
  • For sponsors: your budget band.
  • Your areas of focus or expertise.
  • Any free-text message, motivation, or goal you write to us.
  • Technical data: your IP address, which we use for rate-limiting and abuse prevention, and cookieless usage analytics.

Why we use it

We use your information to read and respond to your application, to decide whether you are a fit for the community, and to let you know about relevant events and updates.

We use the technical data to keep the site working, stop spam and abuse, and understand which pages people visit. We do not use your data to build profiles or to make automated decisions about you.

Legal basis

We rely on two grounds. When you submit a form after this policy is available, you give consent for us to contact you about the community and our events. We also rely on our legitimate interest in reviewing and responding to your application.

You can withdraw consent or object at any time by emailing yan@nerovny.com. Withdrawing consent does not affect anything we did with your data before you asked us to stop.

Who receives it

We do not sell your data. We share it only with two service providers who help us run the basics:

Google LLC stores your form submissions in Google Sheets, sent there through an Apps Script webhook. Google processes this data under its data processing terms.

Resend (resend.com) sends our transactional email - the notification to our team and the confirmation back to you - under its Data Processing Agreement.

Both act on our instructions and only for the purposes above.

International transfer

Both Google and Resend are based in the United States, so your data is transferred there. For Google, these transfers rely on the Standard Contractual Clauses in its data processing terms. For Resend, they rely on the safeguards in its Data Processing Agreement, including the Standard Contractual Clauses where they apply. These are the standard legal safeguards for sending data outside your country.

How long we keep it

We keep application data until you ask us to delete it. We review and prune it at least every 24 months, so we are not holding information we no longer need.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you have rights over your data. These include:

  • Access: ask for a copy of the data we hold about you.
  • Rectification: ask us to correct data that is wrong or out of date.
  • Erasure: ask us to delete your data.
  • Restriction: ask us to pause how we use your data.
  • Objection: object to us using your data.
  • Portability: ask for your data in a portable format.
  • Withdraw consent: tell us to stop contacting you at any time.
  • Complain to a supervisory authority: if you think we have mishandled your data, you can complain to the data protection regulator in your country or region. In the EU or EEA, that is the authority where you live or work.

Cookies and analytics

We use Vercel Web Analytics to see which pages are visited. It is cookieless and does not collect any personally identifying information.

We use one functional cookie to remember the language you choose. It is needed for the site to work and is not used for tracking or advertising.

We do not use advertising or tracking cookies, and we do not follow you around the web.

Changes to this policy

If we change how we handle your data, we will update this page and change the date at the top. For significant changes, we will try to give you a heads-up where we can.
